The Waikato New Zealand's Holiday Heartland

The Waikato

New Zealand's Holiday Heartland

Centrally located approximately 90 minutes from Auckland, Tauranga and Rotorua, the region can be a base for any holiday in the Central North Island.

The Waikato is a region of lush, green hills, bush and farmland, with exceptional surf on the West coast. The beautiful Waikato River carves its journey through the landscapes, and intersects the region's hub, Hamilton - a city of education and scientific research, parks and gardens, fine cuisine and cafes, culture and attractions.

Throughout the region discover bush-clad mountains, stunning waterfalls, hot mineral pools, beaches and, of course, the magical limestone glowwormcaves in Waitomo. Travel off the beaten track for more memorable views and experiences. Charming towns are dotted throughout the region, each one with its own specialities. Visitors to Hamilton and the Waikato region enjoy the rich scenery, a relaxed atmosphere and a broad range of passive and adrenalin-pumping activities and attractions.

If it's for adventure or a relaxing break, the Waikato region has it all. Following the mighty Waikato River as it carves its way from the mountains to the sea, explore the heart of the land - where you never know what is coming around the next bend!

Take your time to relax and meet the local people.

Hamilton City
New Zealand's fourth largest metropolitan area and largest inland city, Hamilton is the perfect central place to launch any visit to the Waikato. You'll find a complete range of accommodation options.

Stroll through an abundance of shops and enjoy lunch or dinner at one of the trendy cafes or restaurants in the city's historic Southend. The Southend is where you'll find the Waikato Museum of Art & History, featuring excellent exhibits on contemporary art, local culture and Maori heritage. Next door is ArtsPost which regularly hosts exhibitions from talented local artists.

Hamilton is host to major international events including the annual National Agricultural Fieldays, and the Hot Air Balloon Fiesta. Visitors can enjoy a ride on the MV Waipa Delta Paddleboat, visit the spectacular Hamilton Gardens and see the Southern Hemisphere's largest freeflight Aviary at Hamilton Zoo & Freeflight Sanctuary.
